“Oh My God!” is all I could think as my jaw dropped to the floor, breathlessly I entered into the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona’s city center. My body covered in chill bumps and tears of joy welled up in my eyes. The Basillica of the Sagrada Familia is the most harmoniously astounding religious structure that I have ever stepped foot inside. Words cannot describe the sheer feeling of peaceful serenity that engulfed me during my visit.
Presently in the twenty-first century, the interior of the Sagrada Familia seems futuristic even for today. It blows my mind that the design was conceived over one-hundred and thirty years ago. The architectural genius, Antoni Gaudí took over as lead architect in 1883. The structure is still under construction with a completion date near 2026. It is already a UNESCO World Heritage site, never mind that it is still a construction site. Gaudi once stated, “My client is not in a hurry.” I imagine the ghost of the Sagrada Familia patiently waiting in the pews! The exterior of the structure is cold stone with ornate sculptures covering every inch. The eighteen Spires, mimicking a hand-dripped Sand Castle, once completed will make the structure the tallest religious building in the world.
I went with a friend who had days earlier visited the Basillica of the Sagrada Familia. As we entered, she looked at me and said, “Get Ready!” The interior is so airy and open; its stark grey smooth stone-surfaces are glazed by the sun shining through the stained glass creating the most brilliant pastel colors. The amazing colors from the lighting fills you with sheer happiness!
